39 - Family reunion

Previous session: 38 - The power of Friendship (and this gun we found)

On Paildreo's track
...

To be able to follow Paildreo on the Catwalk, we have to deal with the Morphoids and Morphlings blocking our way.

We're recovering a bit before venturing forth.

We decide to go after Paildreo, and quickly this time, as we assume they cleared a good part of the path. And in our way, there doesn't seem to be much enemies, and we avoid the rooms filled with enemies.
[Perception - Pass ✔] Balnorin has the feeling we're being followed and shares the information.
When we stop to look back, no one shows up. We decide to prepare an ambush, and we go to a corner and observe. Persy casts [Invisibility] on Axel so they stay ahead and perceive who is following us.
[Stealth - Fail ❌] We're trying to hide (but doesn't seem effective with the noise we're making).
[Perception - Fail ❌] We see behind Axel an arrow of purplish energy forms and lunges directly in Balnorin chest (dealing 31 dmg).

Persy
HEY! WE COME IN PEACE!

There's a silence for a moment...
[Perception - Pass ✔] Persy, Axel and Nesvalyn heard scuttling noises, as the entity seems to go away from us.

Axel
What happened?
Balnorin
That son of a bitch. I'm going to murder it.
Nesvalyn (shaking his head)
It was... something oddly familiar, similar on how I fight.
Axel
But wait, where did you get your power?
Nesvalyn
I'd guess from the Minero, and we're facing to something similar with Axel and their siblings... I guess we could call that one of my "siblings".

Persy casts [Cure Wounds] on Balnorin and regains 7 HP.

Nesvalyn tries to focus where the creature went.
[Insight - Fail ❌] It's hard to pinpoint precisely where it went with all the Minero around.

Reylynn casts [Longstrider] (twice) to make it benefit the whole party.
We keep progressing towads the bridge. Suddenly we hear and see a light screen bipping near us.

INCOMING CALL

We answer the call, as we see it's the private Malory calling, but she's not in the mess hall anymore, she's running through the corridors.

Private Mallory
Oh thank god! I've been trying to reach you by calling all the intercoms!
Persy
Is everything ok Mallory?
Private Mallory
The Bridge has fallen, I repeat, the Bridge has fallen!
Axel
What does it mean?
Nesvalyn
The higher ups are no more.
Private Mallory
Welp, so a group of us bailed out and we're trying to get out-

We hear gunshots behind her, and she ducks for cover.

Private Mallory
You should also retreat as soon as possible!
Balnorin
We're close to the bridge.
Nesvalyn
Let's still have a look, at worst case we will be leaving too.
Axel
But what does that mean?
Balnorin
Fantastic, it sounds like a plan.

he slams the panel, ending abruptly the call.

Axel
I never understood how you work.
Balnorin
You never had to. Anyway, forward.
Nesvalyn
Hey Balnorin...
Balnorin
...
Nesvalyn
Balnorin!

Nesvalyn runs and grabs Balnorin on the shoulder to stop his progression

Nesvalyn
What are you doing?
Balnorin
I'm reaching the bridge.
Nesvalyn
And then?
Balnorin
We'll see.
Persy
We're supposed to be careful.
Axel
Why do you want to reach the bridge?
Balnorin
I don't, we want to.
Axel
But why do you want to do that?
Balnorin
...
Nesvalyn
Ok, so we reach the place, don't harm my fiancé, and mostly, don't do something reckless. That thing who attacked us wants to separate us and take advantage of it.
Persy
Exactly.

We resume our march, and we reach a steel door who's locked, separating us from reaching the bridge.

The Bridge
...

Nesvalyn
Wait, I was thinking, the Private said the bridge had fallen...

Reylynn casts [Knock] on the steel door before Nesvalyn finishes his sentence...
↪ [Acrobatics/Athletics] When the door slides open and it opens to the Astral Sea and Reylynn, Nesvalyn and Balnorin stay still, whereas Axel and Persy are attracted in the room, being dragged into the void vacuum.
Axel manages to get back using the Broom of Flying and Persy using the Pirate Hookshot.
We manage to close the door back once everybody is back.

Reylynn
I'm sorry!
Axel
What now?
Nesvalyn
Fuck, fuck, fuck. They can't be dead. THEY. CAN'T.

[Perception] No trace of Paildreo on the bridge during that event.
Balnorin casts [Locate Creature] to detect Paildreo, and finds out they're not on the bridge, but back on the floor below us.

Balnorin
I know where they are.

Upon saying that, he leaves and starts to track Paildreo.

Nesvalyn
Wait.. how do you... ok, lead the way.
Axel
Not going to hurt them?
Balnorin
Indeed.

During the way back, Axel was pretty curious about what is this fiancé thing and about the past of the party. Persy shares some of his growing memories on the way.

Axel
How old are you all?
Nesvalyn
Definitively too old for my kin.
Persy
It's been hard to track time, but I think I'm 25 right now?
Nesvalyn
Wait, you hold something Persy, how does the time pass here?
Persy
Hold up, how old are you?
Nesvalyn
Around 119 I think? But my kin is supposed to live up to 80 years, I know I'm living longer because of my affliction... but Paildreo? They should be dead from old age, and yet.
Persy
We'll see when we'll be back on Wundera and compare how long it's been there.

Back on Paildreo's track
...

We keep tracking Paildreo, and once on the proper floor, the hallways have much more Morphoids. Luckily for us, they're more focused to do a task, like they entered a work mode. They're touching things that turns them into crystals, probably colonizing the place as a last step of a siege.
We go to the room Balnorin senses Paildreo, and it appears to be a training hall or the place they test the equipment needing space to operate.
On the far sight of the room is a circular window with the indication "Lab", where Paildreo should be. We're progressing towards the Labs.
[Perception - Pass ✔] Axel and Balnorin notice on the left an observation deck, spotting figures in it.
[Insight] Nesvalyn senses three arch figures, looking a lot like him, but more distorted. One of them was a Dragonborn, and the other two are unrecognizable, making it impossible to know their original race.
The one in the center screams in an high pitch, echoing through the hall. Balnorin responds back with a scream using [Thaumaturgy].
Nesvalyn sees what is going to happen to him when he'll reach the final stage of his morphosis, becoming one of these horribly disfigured crystal humanoid hybrids.
They leap down to the deck, and land safely.
The one on the left puts their hands like they're pulling a bow and an arrow appears, and they morph through us.
The one on the right reveals some wings (similar to Nesvalyn) and her hands glow with purple crystal lights.
The one in the middle (and the ex-dragonborn) summons crystal battle axes, and they start creeping towards us.

Persy casts [Cure Wounds] through Ozzy to heal back Balnorin.

Persy
Balnorin? What the fuck happened?

Balnorin spits in his hand and put it on the wounds

Axel
No, what happened? What was that?
Reylynn
I don't like it.
Balnorin
...
Axel
Balnorin? You are my friend as long I've been alive. I need you to answer my questions.
Balnorin
...
Reylynn
Maybe he doesn't understand us and we need to cast Speak with Animals.
Axel
Balnorin. We're going to keep going this adventure, if you keep going like that, I'll have to put you down like a dog.
Persy
You don't have to say you care about him and being your best friend just to follow up by putting him down.
Axel
And he risked an entire world...
Balnorin
You're assuming that on what? You don't know that. I was willing to make it to protect the group.
Axel
Yeah, and as your friends, why you don't take our perspective? We were more capable to killing it without banishing it, and you know it. And that laugh, it was explicitly madness.
Balnorin
What are you talking about?
Persy
You know, you like death with your wonder, and maybe you almost let another entire planet to die?
Balnorin
I didn't laugh, what are you talking about?

[Insight (Nesvalyn)] Balnorin has legitimately no idea what the group is talking about.

Persy
Do you recall the screen?
Balnorin
Yeah, she was rambling, I don't take orders from a cadet.
Nesvalyn
I trust you about not knowing, I'm curious about your lantern. What is it?
Balnorin
A friend.
Nesvalyn
And? Come on, you seem to be not yourself sometimes.
Balnorin
When?
Axel
Just now with the banishment. You weren't listening to us and you laughed like a madman.
Nesvalyn (sighing)
Ok, let's talk about that later, we're not safe here, and I'd like to reunite with someone, then getting everybody to safety. And Balnorin? I won't hesitate to kill you if you touch a single scale of my fiancé.
Balnorin
Got it.

We finally reach the locked door of the lab. Nesvalyn knocks on it and calls Paildreo.

Paildreo
Who are you?
Nesvalyn
The reinforcements?
Paildreo
Right. Good. Ok, once the door is open, decontaminate and get through.

The door opens slides open, and we get in, and it closes behind us. We get decontaminated by pairs, but we all make it in the end. We process through the plastic curtain, and we're entering a quite spacious lab, similar to the one we saw back to The Dome, but more advanced and what we deduce more research oriented. We notice a couple of morphoids on the side, sealed.
Standing on the board and removing their helmet, we see Paildreo in front of us, not facing us yet.

The Reunion
...

They turn around to finally face us, where we can notice an aged gold Dragonborn, in their 60s. Then they welcome us.

Paildreo
Please be welcome, I'm the Admiral Paildreo from the FCA. It's an honour you came help us in these dire times. Have we met before?
Nesvalyn
You.. I... I... You're as beautiful the day I lost you.
Nesvalyn (embarassed and laughing nervously)
S-so, we've technically met...
Persy
WHAT DO YOU MEAN TECHNICALLY?
Paildreo (perplexed after a short silence)
... what do you mean?
Nesvalyn
... can you promise me to not to do anything and hear me out first?

They nod silently.

Nesvalyn (sighing)
...here goes nothing.

Nesvalyn removes his helmet.

Nesvalyn
I recall you were liking purple back then, so...
Paildreo
Nesvalyn?

They come over and rush to touch my face, but retains to do so when being close by.

Paildreo
I... I supposed you were... you're not asleep.
Nesvalyn
...wait, you knew?
Paildreo
Of course, I was the one putting you there.
Nesvalyn
Which means you were trying to gain some time, right?
Paildreo
Yes. Come, sit down. It's been decades, I owe you some explanations.

We follow them and we sit down. We notice it's an enclosed space, as we don't hear the noise outside, giving a safe feeling. We can even observe the Astral Sea, with some dusts of the Minero, deadly, and yet rendering beautifully.

Paildreo
Do you remember what happened?
Nesvalyn
I recall I was preparing for your 20th birthday, and I asked you to deliver my journal and notes to the center so I could prepare everything, and then I blinked and collapsed.
Paildreo
How long were you asleep?
Nesvalyn
Let's see... 6 decades I think? I recall seeing Khallah at the end of her life, so that must be around that.
Paildreo (sighing)
That spell was supposed to be unbreakable. It's no wonder why you don't recall the day of the Wyrd, it happened so fast. Nesvalyn, you and I were sucked in the Wyrd.
Nesvalyn
...what?
Paildreo
Yeah, one day we were here, and another day we were somewhere else. We blinked day by day, and finally came into a ship on the Astral Sea. It's... unimportant. But we spent a year together, sailing, trying to find our way home. We ended up in a quadrant of space under siege by the Minero and you got infected there. It's that day that I started to look for a cure. But as I couldn't find a cure, I had to make a sure you wouldn't complete your transformation by then, so I made a deal with someone and they put you back home in a coma and slowed the virus progression as long you were in a coma.
Nesvalyn
...but it didn't held indefinitively as I'm here.
Paildreo
Apparently. We're close to a result, but I haven't finalized it.
Nesvalyn
How long would it take to transform?
Persy
Is it a normal transformation? I felt he was special.
Paildreo
Perhaps the genetics, or a variant of the virus. But it appears that you're turning into something closer to an hybrid.
Axel
Like the things we saw?
Paildreo
Yes. If you were going to transform into a Morphling or a typical Morphoid, you would have known as you should have turned the day you woke up. And somehow, it's progressing miraculously slowly. It could be also from the deal, but the hybrids are very dangerous. Instead of the Minero taking over, it synergizes with its host, and it comes with psionic power. Each hybrid is different. But the fact you're here and still retain your conscious mind... you're as beautiful the day I lost you.
Nesvalyn
Hey! That's my line. You're stealing my tricks again.
Paildreo
You've always been the crazy one.
Nesvalyn
...but about them. I. Erm. They... proposed me to join them and ascend if I crossed all of you.
Axel
But you didn't.
Paildreo
Well, that's a good thing. I guess you awoken to find me, and I was certain to die of old age alone, and you deemed to do the impossible dear.
Nesvalyn
Honestly, impossible is a word we hear too often, and thanks the Fates and the Great Mother Dragon, we proved many times it doesn't stop us as we're relying on each other.

Paildreo approach their hand near Nesvalyn, but refrains to touch him.

Axel
You can touch him you know, we've been touching him since.
Paildreo
You shouldn't do that you know, as we're not sure if it's safe...
Paildreo (to Nesvalyn)
It's not you dear, it's...
Nesvalyn
It's fine, no worries.
Paildreo
...wait, right here!

They go to quickly search something near the scientific gear.

Nesvalyn
And here they go again...

Paildreo gets back with a syringe.

Paildreo
This is a vaccination, or at least we hope so. It's the best chance we have for a cure, and it's been quite promising so far. But it never has been tested before on humanoids. So, either it will vaccinate and cure people before they fully transition, or it's a super dose of the infection.
Nesvalyn
I'm either cured or I'm becoming a monster right away, nice dilemma.
Axel
This is your best chance of not transforming honestly. You'll transform anyway if you don't take it, so you're just delaying the inevitable. You don't have much to lose.

By the time Axel shares their thought, Paildreo injects the vaccine on themselves. Nesvalyn stands up and takes them by the shoulders.

Nesvalyn (panicking)
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
Paildreo
I can't risk testing it on you, as I don't want to lose you.
Nesvalyn
...I should be the one testing it as I'm the one infected, not you.

They count under their breath, which seems to be a long moment, especially for Nesvalyn.

Paildreo
55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60.

We hold our breath a bit more, as we're unsure what to expect as long they don't say anything.

Paildreo (removing the syringe)
...whatever.

They lean closer and kiss romantically Nesvalyn, catching him by surprise, but not too long before finally sharing that intimate moments after so many decades.
